Application containers are a solution to the problem of getting software to run reliably when moved from one computing environment to another; it’s a lightweight alternative to full virtualization that involves encapsulating an application with its own OS environment. In recent years, containers have grown in popularity, and open source solutions such as Docker* and other container technologies have drawn the attention of high-performance computing (HPC) users as possible methods to easily move their applications.
