Due to a copyright doctrine called the useful article doctrine, goods that have a utilitarian function are not eligible for copyright. Unlike software—where anything you write is inherently copyrighted—with hardware, only the artistic non-utilitarian (ornamental) aspects of your design or perhaps original ideas represented in your schematics are copyrightable.
